Who we are.

Dearest Jasper,
You may be wondering who your parents were before you were present. This is our tale....
When I first met your father, Ryan, I knew that I totally had a huge old crush on him. I thought I was such hot shit in the Boston nightlife scene. I was a super high maintenance, dancing queen of doom, club hopping mad woman. I was underage, and could generally get into clubs and drink under the legal age of 21 (THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN!! LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES hahaha). I was a pretty fabulous dancer if you ask me or anyone who knew me, so I was really convinced that I was seriously the shit.

I met the man who would be your father at one of these clubs, at a regular Thursday night dance and music event called Circle. He was wearing some cute shirt and a leather mini skirt with long, long black hair and platform sandals. That was all I needed to see. I kept telling him he was "so cute" and he kept running away from me since he had a crush on another girl. A few weeks later she rejected him (thank god) and I was suddenly good enough for him to give the time of day, haha. He was a dj, and was dj-ing that night, a few of my friends and I played groupie for a few moments ("oh dj, oh dj" and giving him kisses... by the way, the last time I ever let any other woman put her lips on him!)

He decided at that point that he had a crush on me. We didn't see each other around for about two weeks and ran into each other at a party a mutual friend was throwing. We flirted and had a nice time and then your dad started stalking me down on the internet. We chatted via instant messenger for 70 + hours straight. After staying up all night long talking on i.m., we both called in "sick" to work and went out on a date. We were pretty inseparable after that, and fell in love very quickly.
I asked your father to marry me in early October of 2007. Yes, I proposed to him... He always told me he needed a strong woman to tell him what to do, and I told him, that's for sure. I had beaten uterine cancer in 2006, after a year and a half long battle. Radiation pellets were my treatment, since my stubborn as hell self refused to have a hysterectomy. I wasn't supposed to be able to have children, at least that's what a few fertility doctors had told me. We agreed that we wanted to try to have children at some point. About a week after this conversation, the Red Sox won the '07 World Series on October 28th. We "celebrated" and you were conceived that night. So, regardless of where you go or what you do, you, just like your mother, will always be a Red Sox fan. I found out I was pregnant three days after my 21st birthday. November 15th, 2007. We decided to get married very shortly after that, on January 19th 2008. It was a small ceremony in our Boston, MA apartment. We were married by a Justice of the Peace. I made most of the food myself, your Aunty Em made the cake, we had about 30 guests. Our friend Starr did my hair and a local dress shop was where I bought the dress, which was technically a bridesmaid's dress. (I am far too cheap to buy a "real" wedding dress.)

You were born on August 6th, 2008. I will put up another post about that.

(a brand new you)

I am going to do the "who I am" part... I'll let Daddy do his part...
I am a pagan. I have PTSD. (I hope I can see you big enough to explain to you the full extent of what this means) I listen to sad music and it makes me feel better. I swear like a sailor. I can drink anyone except for Granny Jayne and Aunty Em under the table with tequila shots. I am an environmentalist, especially now that you're here. I want to know our precious planet will survive humans, and that we won't destroy it. I don't want global warming to kill us all before your great-great-great grandkids get to live a full and healthy life. I hate plastic bags and anything that isn't recyclable. As a pagan, I believe that the Earth is our mother, that we should all love her dearly and protect her like we would our own mothers. I believe that the entity of "God" is the planet, and therefore exists around us in every living thing, therefore deserving our full respect. I believe religion a choice to be respected, regardless of how different your faith may be. I despise close-mindedness & am fully disgusted by racism, sexism, biogotry, homophobia, and all other forms of hate. I think everyone should have the opportunity to marry the person they love, whether they be gay or straight. I believe everything Charles Darwin wrote. I love to bake. I have a strong desire to scrapbook, but some little boy in my house really likes to eat paper. I wish that I could write music, but it's just not in my head. I can't play any instruments. I wish I knew how to paint, but just... can't. I love cats. I really love Arthur, he's been there for me through some hard time. As a result I have a soft spot for Blue Russian cats. Arthur really is the best cat ever. He has a lot of personality. He's almost 6 now, and when he dies I'm going to have to convince your dad to get us a dog or something. I don't know what I'll do. I love tattoos. I have two currently, and my next one is inspired by you. I love red wine and dark chocolate. I can cook really well. I am not a picky eater. Indian and Italian foods are my favorites. I am desperately trying to lose weight. I am a smoker and have been since I was 12, and I will slap you if you pick one up before you're 18. I value independence. I am a freak about money and hate not having any. I really like to go grocery shopping and buying things on sale. I love to talk to you like you're a "big person". I like to explain to you how things work even if you don't really understand what I'm talking about. ...Did I mention I swear too much? Because I do. I hope you don't pick up on it too soon. I like to take pictures and wish I had a nicer camera. I love my Blackberry. I refuse to leave the house in my pajamas. I hate looking like crap. I generally overdress for things. I love video games, particularly rpg's. I have bushy eyebrows and have to weedwack them to death with a pair of tweezers on a regular basis. I am a really sarcastic person with a dry, offensive sense of humor. I love to laugh, even if I am uber cynical. I love your father, and don't think that anyone else would ever put up with me if he died or left me. I love you more than any words could ever say, and I hope you are always aware of that regardless of anything else. You and your father mean so much to me. It's pretty sappy. You're a couple of great guys.

Hey Jasper, dad here now. I was born in South Korea and adopted at 13 months old by a wonderful American family. I grew up in Washington and California, but lived most of my childhood in South Carolina. Back when I was a kid I was too smart for my own good, overachieving in school and thinking it would all come easy all the time, which it doesn't. Near perfect SAT scores and tons of AP credits don't get you squat if you don't keep pushing yourself after high school as I quickly learned. After I dropped out of college I started djing and throwing house parties with my friends. I got a job with Kinko's as a way to get out of South Carolina and a couple years later I transferred to Boston. It was there that I met your mother, while djing in the underground dance music scene. After a blisteringly quick courtship we fell madly in love and she asked me to marry her. Soon afterwards, you were conceived and we settled into our lives as parents. A bit about who I am...I like to read science fiction books and non-superhero comics. I enjoy playing video games, mostly rpgs and strategy games like SimCity. I used to rollerblade all around town, it was my preferred form of transportation. I believe that mathematics is the basis for all existence, regardless of whether we have the mentality to understand how it all works together. I'd like to believe that humanity has a place in the future of this planet, but I know that the planet will survive us regardless of how much we try to destroy it. I smoke too many cigarettes, another of the bad habits I hope you don't pick up from me. I follow sports religiously, from a statistical viewpoint, and have since I was a kid. My favorite teams are the major Detroit teams (Tigers, Lions, Pistons and Red Wings) and the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. I used to play soccer and wish it had a bigger following here in America. I drink Mountain Dew like it's water, and water like it's poison (meaning I don't drink it). I started growing out my hair when I finished high school and don't trim it until it gets near my waist. I try to see the good in people regardless of who they are. I enjoy my sleep, whenever and wherever I can get it. I like to eat pretty much anything, especially what your mother cooks (she's a good cook), and enjoy sushi, Indian and Thai. I have a pretty high metabolism which your mother hates and I'm pretty sure you've inherited. I am a pretty good dancer, from what people tell me, and enjoy dancing to high speed/energy music, particularly drumn'bass, hard house, and hardcore, though anything faster than 150 bpm usually gets me moving. I have fairly eclectic musical taste, from 1950s - 70s rock to 80s electro pop to light jazz and electronic dance music. I enjoy wearing a shirt and tie to work, and tshirts and slacks are my usual lounging attire. I try to avoid wearing logos and catch phrases unless they are something I truly believe in. Most of all I love you and your mother, and will do everything that I can to raise you up to be a strong individual who stands up for his own ideals regardless of whether I might agree with them.
